She was launched at the Birkenhead shipyard of camel Laird on the 13th April 1937. HMS Ark royal was involved in the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck but later, while on Malta convoy duty, was torpedoed by the German submarine U 81. Despite all attempts to tow her to grab altar, the ARK royal slowly heeled over and at 0613 hours on the 14th November
